Vowel Team Connect Four

Sometimes vowels have to team up to make long A, E, I, O, and U sounds. Grab a friend and get ready to master the sounds that these vowel teams make by playing a super-fun game.

Materials

Game board and pieces

scissors

Instructions:

Long vowels say their name. The letters below team up to make long vowel sounds. Familiarize yourself with the teams below before playing.

Long A: ai, ay

Long E: ea, ee

Long I: ie

Long O: oa, oe

Long U: oo, ue

  1. Pick the color marker or counter that you will use for the game. Make sure it’s a different color than your partner’s.
  2. Play rock-paper-scissors to decide who goes first.
  3. Take turns reading aloud a word from the game board. If you pronounce the word correctly, color in or cover the circle with your color, then move on to your partner’s turn. If you pronounce the word incorrectly, you do not get to color in or cover a circle before moving on to your partner’s turn.
  4. To win the game you must color in or cover four circles that connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Now high-five your partner because you both worked together so well, just like those vowel teams!
