In America, college football season officially starts on the evening of August 26th; however the game will be played at the local time of noon on August 27th. How is this possible? The game is happening on the other side of the world! According to NCAA.com, California will face Hawaii at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, Australia. While football fans are gearing up for this American past time, there are lots of reasons to appreciate the land down under!
Here are some fun facts you probably didn’t know about Sydney, Australia:
1. Sydney is the largest state capital in Australia with more than 4 million residents.
2. The Sydney Opera House, a spectacular structure with sail-like roofs, has attracted worldwide attention since its completion in 1973.
3. The Aboriginal track star Cathy Freeman lit the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. She won the gold medal in the women’s 400-meter race at those Olympics.
4. Biologists at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney began a captive-breeding program for the Booroolong frog in 2007 with only 34 frogs. In 2008, hundreds of frogs produced in this program were released into the wild.
