Celebrating Black History Month!

February marks Black History Month, a tribute to generations of African American men and women who have made significant contributions to American history and the rest of the world in the fields of science, the arts, politics, sports, entertainment, and more. While this annual observance is synonymous with such prominent figures as Barack Obama, Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King, Jr., Misty Copeland, and Rosa Parks, to name a few, there are countless others who have made a profound impact.

Can your students name the first black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court? Do they know how many African Americans served in the U.S. armed services during World War II? Or what W. E. B. DuBois helped form in 1909?

The following Webquests are designed to get your students learning about these influential people and their roles in our history. Each contains different activities that are developed with the topic and age of the user in mind. Activities include finding facts, learning vocabulary, interpreting images, understanding videos, artistic creations, or playing games. The teacher page provides answers for easy sub grading.

Once your early learners have the basic research skills down, they will be able to find information on just about any topic! Webquests are a great tool for independent learning, a fast substitute teacher plan, or a pre- and post-assessment tool.

What are Webquests? Where can I find them?

Have you ever been given an assignment about a topic you know nothing about? Did you know where to start? Never fear! World Book has lots of great resources to help you get started.

Webquests are print-and-do activities designed to help build students' foundational knowledge by taking them on "expeditions" within World Book Online. Go to Webquests by clicking “Educator Tools” under the “For Educators” menu found in the footer of each database.
